The opera Butterfly Lovers is a Chinese classic work rehearsed by Pibada Opera Company of the DPRK in 2010. Adapted from the Chinese popular love story between Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai over thousand years, it masks high artistic level in terms of singing, stage art, clothing and other elements. The Butterfly Lovers integrates with the DPRK's three-dimensional stage technology and practices of musical drama, coupled with accompanied singing of the North Korean singing drama and dancing art, which reflects the characteristics of the DPRK.

Conductor, Park Sub-Byung
Park Sub-Byung was born on August 28, 1966. He is a conductor of Pibada Opera Company of the DPRK (Meritorious Artist). In October 1994, he graduated from Pyongyang University of Music and Dance. In March 2004, he took advanced study in Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory (Russia). He serves as conductor of five revolutionary operas such as Sea of ??Blood and The Flower Girl.

Present, Pibada Opera Company
Under the special concern from the late DPRK President Kim Il Sung and current leader Kim Jong Il, Pibada Opera Company was established on July 17, 1971. It is named after the drama Sea of ??Blood (created by Kim Il Sung during the Anti-Japanese War Period). Upon the establishment, its top priority was to adapt the classical Sea of ?Blood into a revolutionary opera under the direct leadership of Kim Jong Il. Since then, Pibada Opera Company becomes a national-class art organization specialized in creating and performing operas, which currently comprises more than 600 artists, including highly-revered artists, people's performers, meritorious performers and many famous writers. It enjoys lofty reputation in the DPRK. Heok-pung Kwon is the incumbent President of Pibada Opera Company.

Synopsis
In the Western Jin Dynasty, a young boy Liang Shanbo leaves home for assiduous study outside. In the way, he meets with a girl Zhu Yingtai who is disguised as a man. Both persons hit it off, who are really like-minded. So they become sworn brothers on grass bridge, and then go to Hongluoshan College to study there. Both study together in the college from morning till evening, and cherish profound feelings each other. Three years later, Zhu Yingtai returns home. On the way back, Liang Shanbo escorts her over 18 miles. Both are reluctant for parting. Under others' directions, Liang Shanbo knows that Zhu Yingtai is a girl in fact. So he makes an offer of marriage with Zhu Yingtai, but he is refused by Zhu Family. After going home, he feels grievous and stricken. Then he dies of severe illness. Zhu Yingtai suffers from grief for Liang Shanbo's death. Before long, Ma Family comes to take bride, and Zhu Yingtai is forced to allow marriage. On the wedding day, Zhu Yingtai detours to hold a memorial ceremony before the tomb of Liang Shanbo. Moved by Zhu Yingtai's mourning, rain, storm, thunder and lightning come up so that the tomb of Liang Shanbo is cracked. Zhu Yingtai lightly jumps into the tomb. Subsequently, the tomb is closed again. Finally, rain stops and the sky is clear. Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai turn into butterflies and happily fly in the secular world.
